AKAA 2023: The 8th edition of the fair dedicated to contemporary African art offers new talents and new perspectives
Blazing resistance
“I was born in Zimbabwe of British heritage, to a Scottish and English family. But I have no roots in England today. One hundred years in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Naturalized French through painting. Now I live in London”. It is in these terms that Duncan Wylie defines himself. His “mental baggage” is both African “because (he) grew up in Zimbabwe” and European. His painting serves to bring together these two dimensions of his personality. The result is “something very colorful, very physical, well studied but also very relaxed”. His series "The Sappers and the Tsunami", which expresses the fact of "defying circumstances" as his compatriots did in the face of the authoritarian regime of Robert Mugabe (former president of Zimbabwe), shows this. There we find The Sapeur and The Tsunami (Flamingo). The central figure in the painting is dressed in pink and he stands like a pink flamingo. “It defies abstraction.” “Painting, for me, is a challenge. Each artist must defy their circumstances,” summarizes the Zimbabwean artist.

Flamboyante résistance
"Je suis né au Zimbabwe de souche britannique, famille écossaise anglaise. Mais je n'ai aucune racine en Angleterre aujourd'hui. Cent ans au Zimbabwe et en Afrique du Sud. Naturalisé Français par la peinture. Maintenant, je vis à Londres". C'est en ces termes que se définit Duncan Wylie. Son "bagage mental" est à la fois africain "parce qu' (il a) grandi au Zimbabwe" et européen. Sa peinture lui sert à réunir ces deux dimensions de sa personnalité. Il en résulte "quelque chose de très coloré, de très physique, de bien étudié mais aussi de très relâché". Sa série "Les Sapeurs et le tsunami", qui exprime le fait de "défier les circonstances" comme ses compatriotes l'ont fait face au régime autoritaire de Robert Mugabe (ancien président du Zimbabwe), le montre. On y retrouve The Sapeur and The Tsunami (Flamingo) [le sapeur et le tsunami (Flamingo)]. Le personnage central du tableau est habillé en rose et il se tient comme un flamant rose. "Il défie l'abstraction". "La peinture, pour moi, est un défi. Chaque artiste doit défier ses circonstances", résume l'artiste zimbabwéen.
